Expectations should include how you will regularly communicate with them and how they can best communicate with you, if there will be live class sessions based on the Dartmouth class schedule, and how they might demonstrate engagement with their classmates and the course through the online tools. Until then you have a couple of options. Set up a discussion forum for general course questions and chatter, where everyone can benefit from the questions and answers. Fear not, however: you'll soon learn to read the gallery just as well as you can read the body language around your seminar table. Focus on course objectives, be flexible, and adapt to your students’ needs with kindness and respect. Have you given students enough advance notice so they can plan their time.
